Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Tu Mera Dil Tu Meri Jaan

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (Urdu: نصرت فتح على خاں, born October 13, 1948, died August 16, 1997), was a Pakistani musician, primarily a singer of Qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufis (a mystical tradition within Islam). He featured in Time magazine's 2006 list of 'Asian Heroes'.Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born in Lyallpur (now Faisalabad), Pakistan on October 13, 1948 to Fateh Ali Khan [2], a distinguished and legendary musicologist, vocalist, instrumentalist, and Qawwal. Nusrat had four sisters and one brother, Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan. They grew up on Regal Road in central Faisalabad, in a small flat that was rented from a local successful business man, Naseeruddin Mian.

Younus wants to lead Pak to 2011 World Cup win

Even after becoming the second Pakistani captain to win a World Cup with the Twenty20 format triumph, Younus Khan is not a satisfied man and now wants to emulate Imran Khan by winning the 50-over World title in 2011.

Sources close to Younus said that he decided to quit Twenty20 cricket for star all-rounder Shahid Afridi to take the skipper's mantle in the shortest format but he is not in a mood to stand down from the ODI captaincy.

"Younus is a very straightforward character so he has decided to quit Twenty20 cricket and leave it to the youngsters with (Shahid) Afridi in charge. But Younus is dead serious about captaining the team to take a shot at 2011 World Cup title," the source said.

According to sources, Younus was not being able to assert his authority in the beginning of World Twenty20 because of problems among senior team members, similar to what happened in 1992 over late inclusion of star batsman Javed Miandad, which was the reason behind Pakistan losing the early matches.

It is no secret that when Younus replaced Shoaib Malik as captain in February after Pakistan lost its home one-day series to Sri Lanka, some of the leading players were not happy with the change.

Younus reportedly faced problems in getting cooperation from players including Malik, Misbah-ul-Haq, Salman Butt and even wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal. But fortunately for him he got support from Afridi.

"Younus faced problems because these players were resisting the inclusion of youngster Shahzad Hasan and even Fawad Alam in the playing eleven and didn't want either Butt or Ahmed Shahzad dropped," one source said.

"To complicate matters, Younus was also not getting enough cooperation from coach Intikhab Alam and assistant coach, Aaqib Javed. That was one of the reasons why Pakistan had a poor start to the World Cup and the team looked disjointed," the source added.

It was before Pakistan's crucial do or die match against New Zealand in the Super Eight stage that former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif, who is very close to Younus, advised him to put his foot down and exert authority.

"Rashid advised Younus to change the playing eleven by including Shahzab to open with Akmal, play Fawad Alam regularly and use Afridi at the top order," a source disclosed.

"After this, Younus got very serious and let the coach, assistant coach and other players know that since he was the captain he would take all the decisions on team strategy and the playing eleven."

The source disclosed that Younus was assured full support by Afridi and some other players.

"That is why Afridi was sent up the order and took on a new responsibility in the tournament. That Younus also scored runs helped a lot," the source disclosed.

"New York track is not plagiarized" - Pritam

The super-successful Pritam Chakraborty is a very unhappy man right now. The accusation that the track 'Hai Junoon' from New York is copied from a track 'Naluri Lelaki' by the Samsons has put the composer in a state of depression.

Defending himself, Pritam says, "When I was getting inspired by outside sources, I openly admitted it, right up to the title track in Race. Now when I am not copying from any source why am I being attacked? 'Hai Junoon' is not copied from any source. I can swear on my music on that. I've vowed never to copy from any source."

Surprisingly, the charge was leveled first by singer Pankaj Awasthi on the internet. Awasthi has sung for Pritam in New York. On Yashraj Films' request Awasthi hastily withdrew his plagiarism allegations against Pritam but the damage was done.

The latest allegation has taken its toll on Pritam's family life. "My wife is very disturbed. And I haven't slept for two nights," said Pritam on Sunday afternoon. "What is the point of success when we aren't allowed to enjoy it? The internet is filled with abuse against me. It's unfair. That's all I can say."

Pritam returned from Goa before he was assailed by these accusations. He was there for a very unusual assignment. We generally have composers settling scores before the film starts shooting, or at the most delivering individual songs before it is being shot.

But here's a case in reverse. Pritam flew to Goa this week to check out the shooting of Rohit Shetty's All The Best before composing the song.

Explains Pritam, "I understood what my producer Ajay Devgan and the director Rohit wanted. And I already had a couple of tunes in mind for the situation. But we decided I go there get a feel of the mood and then compose. Once I went to Goa I got a complete feel of the rhythm and tempo and atmosphere of the scene. I immediately knew which tune to use."

Pritam returned from Goa to these terrible accusations.

All eyes on 'Kambakkht Ishq'

"I never thought KAMBAKKHT ISHQ would turn out to be a massive film. Of course, with Akshay and Kareena in the cast, it was meant to be a big-budget film, but the film grew in size and stature the moment we finished scripting and began casting," KAMBAKKHT ISHQ producer Sajid Nadiadwala admits.

There's no denying that everyone's keenly watching KAMBAKKHT ISHQ for various reasons. One of the prime reasons being, the film is expected to bail out the industry from its current crisis-ridden situation. The expectations, hence, are humungous.

KAMBAKKHT ISHQ is helmed by first-time director Sabbir Khan, who has been an apprentice to Mahesh Bhatt and also David Dhawan [during the making of MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI]. Incidentally, Sajid's last three films have been helmed by debutantes -- JAAN-E-MANN [Shirish Kunder], HEYY BABYY [Sajid Khan] and now, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ. "They [newcomers] add so much freshness to a film. They come up with innovative ideas and their approach to work is unadulterated," Sajid explains.

KAMBAKKHT ISHQ stars three Hollywood celebrities -- Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards. "Actually, their names cropped up while scripting the movie. Little did we realise then that they would eventually star in the film," the prolific producer admits. Was it tough getting them on board? "A lot of pre-production work and detailing went into it. It took us several months of planning to get them on board," he states.

While KAMBAKKHT ISHQ is slated for release next week, Sajid is getting ready to launch three more projects, with Sajid Khan [HOUSEFULL], Siddharth Anand [Ranbir-Priyanka starrer isn't titled yet] and Imtiaz Ali.

Katrina Kaif's Realizations While Shooting

While shooting for her upcoming film "New York," Katrina Kaif was shocked by what she learned about post 9/11 trauma, having not realized it before.

The actress was distraught by stories of what happened following the 9/11 attacks on America where many innocent people were detained and interrogated for being suspects in the attacks.

Katrina was immensely saddened when she visited Guantanamo Bay and learned about how the 9/11 detainee prisoners were treated while they lived there.

The actress said, "We are not making a documentary on 9/11 and so this film is highly entertaining yet very realistic." To shoot in a place that has been in revolving in the news and post-trauma of 9/11 was overwhelming for Katrina.

Kaif speaks on her experience, "I did not meet any person arrested and jailed in connection with the terror attacks. But I have heard stories about them when I was shooting there. Some most wanted criminals have stayed there", she said.

Despite this, the actress spoke on how the atmosphere and stories she heard really affected her and how she'll remember this experience she had for life. She says she found more value in her role as an actress when she saw that prisoner's were completely withdrawn from any form of entertainment.

What do you think about Katrina Kaif's realizations? Do you think that a lot of celebrities live in a separate world, or do they seem to be proactive about many ongoing and pressing issues. Let us know below.

Angelina Jolie to Film Another Movie in India

Mumbai is buzzing with anticipation for Angelina’s big return to India. This can mean one of two things. Either she is preparing for a role in a gut wrenching thriller or she plans to add another member to the Jolie-Pitt clan. Well she’s not there to adopt another kid. That’s been put on the back burner for now as Angelina plans to reprise her role as Fox for "Wanted 2."

Director Timur Bekmabetov said, “In the late autumn or winter, shooting will begin. The shooting will take place in America, India, and Russia.”

This may come as a bit of a surprise to some of you because her character was killed in the original installment of "Wanted." I guess we are going to have to wait and see what the writers have up their sleeves, this is definitely a juicy plot twist. Well she was shot in the head after all, so this should be…better be quite interesting.

I wonder if ‘Wanted 2’ can live up to its Oscar nominated predecessor. We all know Angie is not one to disappoint. Oh well, if all else fails we can bet that she won’t be leaving India empty handed. I suspect a little baby will find itself with a new family in the cushy confines of Beverly Hills, California by the end of her travels.

This will be Angelina’s second film shot in India. The first was her portrayal of Marianne Pearl in ‘A Mighty Heart’. The film was about the life and times of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter that was beheaded by terrorists a few years ago.

Well I hope India is prepared for the second coming…of Angelina that is. So get your sun glasses on because the flashbulbs are going to be extra bright this fall as a whirlwind of media coverage is sure to cover every second of Angelina in India.

Rihanna in Court Today

It seems that the Rihanna and Chris Brown controversy has been all over the news for some time now. Well, we may finally be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Rihanna will be making her first court appearance today, Monday June 22, 2009 after Brown’s legal team made an unsuccessful attempt to delay the court date.

Rihanna was subpoenaed to appear in court today and her managers reported that she will be a cooperative witness and is willing to answer all questions. This will be the first time the public will get a first-hand account of the alleged beating from last February.

At the conclusion of today’s hearing the judge will decide if there is enough evidence to proceed with a jury trial. Brown faces 2 felony counts of assault and making criminal threats to ex -girlfriend Rihanna on a Los Angeles street last February.

Chris Brown still remains confident in his non-guilty plea to the allegations. I guess we are all going to have to hold tight and see what happens.

Bipasha Basu, Asin and Shilpa Shetty in Clinic Advert

You’ve seen the three different Filmfare covers of the sexy Bipasha Basu, Shilpa Shetty and Asin, and now we have their brand new advert for Clinic All Clear Anti-Dandruff shampoo! It’s quite obvious that the Filmfare covers were inspired by the commercial, because each woman are clad in sleek black outfits and swinging about their long, black, impossibly shiny hair. And inside the covers of the Filmfare magazine, the ladies are doing the same in snapshots.

So check out the commercial below and let us know what you think about it by dropping your comments below! Which girl do you think did a better job in the commercial?

Kamini says: At IIFA Gowariker Shows that Feet in Mouth are the new 'Fashion'

And yes, ladies and gents, the plural is intentional: Ashutosh Gowariker apparently managed to wedge two feet in his mouth at this year's International Indian Film Academy Awards in Macau, China.

Foot One was inserted when he ingloriously slammed actress Priyanka Chopra with this unfortunate accolade cum insult: "Priyanka I love you, but I don't know how you got the award for Best Actress when Aishwarya was also nominated in the same category for 'Jodhaa Akbar'."

While I was tempted to give him the benefit of the doubt for a sarcastic joke gone awry, he promptly inserted Foot Two during his attempt to recover from this gaffe, wondering aloud if Priyanka's hard work, rather than lack of natural talent, was reason for this award. Directly from the horse's (rather wide) mouth: "Maybe it is because you are very hard-working and she is a natural..."

I wonder: Too many feet for one mouth . . .or is his mouth too big for one foot?

Turns out this isn't the first time that Gowariker has opened his mouth widely at an awards ceremony. In January 2009 he verbally sparred with Sajid and Farah Khan over their comments about Harman Baweja. While his intentions in this case may have been just, it is clear that Gowariker doesn't keep silent about anything that is on his mind.

Feet or no feet, that's one wide open mouth.

Interestingly, Priyanka and Gowariker are currently working together on the upcoming film "What's your Rashee?" I am confident that the film producers will save LOADS on air conditioning costs as the set will be naturally chilled. Although I hope that Priyanka's rising fame will soon soothe the embarrassment of this Gowariker's gaffe, if not, there's always next year's IIFA for payback.

Music Review: Jashnn

By: Mufsin Mahbub

I would say ‘Jashnn’ is easily one of the most eagerly awaited soundtracks of 2009. And it’s not just because it’s a Bhatt soundtrack but this time the main reason is due to the fact that it’s the debut soundtrack of relatively new composers, Sharib-Toshi. The talented duo of brothers Sharib and Toshi Sabri trying to make it big on the Bollywood music scene have already become an overnight sensation with their superhit number “Maahi” from the Bhatt’s last movie ‘Raaz - The Mystery Continues‘. Mukesh was so impressed with that composition that he immediately signed them in for their next movie composition which happens to be the musically founded ‘Jashnn’ starring Adhyayan Suman as a struggling rock-star singer.

While “Maahi” was a successful track, it’s a completely different challenge when you have to create numerous tracks on a consistently high level. Can the talented duo Sharib-Toshi pull off the impossible? Let’s find out…

“Nazrein Karam” is a simple dance track to open the album and it works well for the actor Adhyayan Suman. It succeeds with its intended impact and with it’s high energy levels, decibel levels and pace. This is all about getting your feet tapping in more ways than one. It’s still weak from an auditory perspective because the arrangements are nothing new or fresh from what we have all heard before. Nevertheless, K.K. deserves some kudos for singing alongside with Shreya Ghoshal. The Kilogram Mix in the soundtrack is quite enjoyable and will be a hit in dance clubs and parties…

The next track “Aaya Re” has a breezy soft rock feel and undoubtedly helped by K.K’s powerful vocals, but it leaves you unconvinced and disappointed due to its limited replay value. You may expect that Sharib-Toshi could’ve done better.

And they do exactly that with a stunning track called “Dard-E-Tanhai” which is easily the best song from "Jashnn." The somber tone gives a touch of class and embodies the hallmarks of a chart-buster in the making; melodically strong musical arrangements (particularly the piano, guitar and percussion), fantastic lyrics and vocals by Nouman Javaid. Sharib-Toshi have produced a notable track which has the potential of remaining on your playlist for some time to come. In fact it could only be better with a remix version. And thankfully, the equally mesmerizing Kilogram Mix is included.

Nouman Javaid was the highlight of “Dard-E-Tanhai” and his talents are only further enhanced in the next track called “Main Chala“. This track is equally rich in the singing and lyrics department. Musically, Sharib-Toshi provide a fairly pure platform with only a piano and an acoustic guitar used to soothe the soul. The occasional harmonica play is sheer blissful and a nice touch to a very enjoyable track. “Main Chala Unplugged” is just a short rendezvous. Great music!

I would say that “Tere Bin” is probably the weakest track from ‘Jashnn’ as it brings nothing fresh to the romance genre. In fact, you probably won’t even put it in your playlist after the first listen. Sung by Shaan and Shreya Ghoshal, their vocals works well but the lyrics are another huge letdown and overall the outcome is a forgettable listening experience. Sharib-Toshi clearly need to work on this genre for future soundtracks.

Thankfully the duo ends the album on a high note. The combination of a superb melody and some fine vocals by the Sabri brothers make “Aish Karle” an extremely addictive rock tune that should become a favorite after a few listens. The lyrics are pretty mindless but when the music is this attractive, who cares? Just turn up the music and enjoy!

This album is certainly good but the harsh truth is that it also fails to live up to its own expectations and could and should have been so much better, particularly for a “debut” soundtrack. I think this album deserves a four out of five with the great highlights of the album being “Dard-E-Tanhai” and “Nazrein Karam“. The other tracks sound like it was borrowed from past Bhatt movies and aren’t “fresh” or very creative.

That’s not taking anything from Sharib-Toshi who have done the Bhatts proud and further demonstrated their exciting potential. In doing so they also break the shackles from the current crop of extremely mediocre soundtracks this year bringing a much needed boost to the music scene in the process. Consequently ‘Jashnn’ comes highly recommended for starved music fans for those looking for the music within. One of the best tracks this year, so enjoy!

Music Review: Short Kut - The Con Is On

By: Mufsin Mahbub

Anil Kapoor‘s produced film "Short Kut - The Con Is On" stars Akshaye Khanna, Arshad Warsi, and Amrita Rao in a comedy about the Bollywood industry. The music trio Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy have been known for their music in many hit films like "Rock On" and "Taare Zameen Par." The music contains four original songs and two remixes. They have made the music for ‘Short Kut’ and it doesn’t seem like it’s their best work so far.

The first track, "Kal Nau Baje" is a melodious romantic number sung by Sonu Niigaam and Alka Yagnik. The soft music and vocals by the two experienced and talented singers are the great highlights of the song. It has the potential to stay with the listener even after the song is over.

Up next is "Kyun Hota Hai Dil Deewana" and it is sung by Javed Ali and Shreya Ghosal. The song has traces of qawalli music but it doesn‘t stand out. It’s foot-tapping and high beats has does appeal for some time, but it lacks in getting the interest throughout the whole song.

"Mareeze Mohabbat" has a fusion of rustic and western influences. It is different owing to its sudden break from Indian music to western and back to Indian during the course of the song. The track is sung by Sonu Nigam's sister Nikita Nigam along with Kirti Sagathia, Hrishikesh Kamerkar and composer Shankar Mahadevan. With touches of English rap mixed with Indian touches, the song does have a potential to impress the listener. The song also has a remixed version, making the already fast-paced song fit for the dance floor.

Finally, we have the title track of the film "Patli Gali," sung by Shankar Mahadevan. The song, which has a lot of distorted and electro beats, somehow lacks the punch and the quality to gain the attention of the listener. The remix version of the song does not help hype up the original.

The trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy always strengthens one's faith in good music as they aren’t afraid of experimenting. However, the composers have not gone that extra mile for the album of "Short Kut." With the exception for "Kal Nau Baje," I would give the album a one out of five because the music is not that bad, yet it is not as good as their earlier work.

Pakistan wins the world ICC Twenty20 world cup final by 8 wickets. (PAKISTAN ZINDABAD)

The man of the match was Shahid Afridi

Runners-up last time, Pakistan went one better in the midsummer sunshine at Lord’s, winning the World Twenty20 by eight wickets with eight balls to spare. It was an emotional occasion for a side who have been disenfranchised by terrorism, unable to play matches at home, destined to roam the world in search of cricket to sustain interest and their development. No one, not even those who would have seen as cathartic a Sri Lanka win, will begrudge them their triumph in front of a fervent crowd, the noise of which will have disturbed the St John’s Wood Sunday for some hours afterwards.

Abdul Razzaq allowed the right balance for Afridi to do what he did.

Pakistan hit Sri Lanka very hard! Afridi knew when to take a chance. He batted really well. A brilliant ending to an outstanding tournament.

Shahid Afridi hit an unbeaten 54 to steer his side home along with Shoaib Malik, who made 24 not out in a match-winning stand of 76.

The final first award of the match was granted to stand up performer boom boom Afridi.

Shahid thanked Allah, he had injured his ankle but played very well.

Youthquake: Beyond being the girls Zeb & Haniya

by Madeeha Syed

“If you have to listen to local female musicians, you should take note of Zeb and Haniya’s compositions,” Sajid Ghafoor (from Sajid and Zeeshan) commented several years ago. We were having a discussion on the dearth of female musical groups in the country and how one or two aspiring artistes had managed to generate acclaim for themselves by simply posting their work online – even though their music skills still needed a lot of practice and development.

Following that conversation, I searched for Zeb and Haniya online and found their SoundClick.com profile; however, due to the internet problem, I could barely listen to their work.

Incidentally several days later, I heard Chup (their first single on the airwaves) on radio. What I particularly liked was that the sound was fresh, crisp, and raw in its originality with nothing but the vocals and the acoustic guitar dominating the track leaving the song clean. The way it had been sung felt incredibly natural and free of all pretensions.

Several months later, I found from Mekaal Hasan that Zeb and Haniya were recording in his studio with Gumby and Shallum as the collaborating musicians. It turned out that the girls had received a lot of encouragement from these musicians to record and were now finally doing it. When I met Gumby after the recording, he seemed extremely excited and thought that this was going to be a very bluesy album with a hint of jazz here and there.

Prior to that, Zeb and Haniya were also making waves in the underground scene in Lahore by doing some small-scale performances. One of them included a somewhat unplugged performance they collaborated on with Mekaal Hasan and Adnan Sarwar, the latter both on guitars, sometime in 2006.

Having heard about them, been in touch with them briefly, I finally met them sometime in June 2007 when I did their interview. One of the things I immediately noticed was that Haniya seemed very relaxed and sure of herself. She has a propensity to make sure that everyone around her was as comfortable as well! My first impression of Zeb was that she seemed shy at first, however, as the interview progressed; she displayed her more gregarious side. The entire vibe during the interview was incredibly friendly and they ended up doing an impromptu performance of Chup there and then. Sections of the interview and the audio version of that performance can be heard on Dawn.com
There was no looking back for them once their album was launched. They’ve managed to garner international acclaim for music, have taken out a highly talked-about video of Aietebaar directed by Saqib Malik, and are invited to perform regularly. Their most recent performance at a fusion music show, showcasing a rubab player flown in from the NWFP for their Pushto/Darri/ Farsi song Paimona, seems to display a whole new side to their music that is absolutely heart-warming to say the least.

Latest update on Kaavish's debut album 'Gunkali'

Hey,
Hope all of you are doing well . We thought it was time to let you know why we still haven't put out the album , we're sure most of you are probably not even interested in knowing , as we've made too many promises and hardly ever kept any . Unfortunately , all our promises before last year weren't kept as we were constantly trying to make the album sound as good as possible . But late last year , we got done with the album and the video , and early this year , they were ready to be out there . Ever since then , we've been hearing from the Record Label how they'll put them out there soon . Call it the biased system of our industry , or lack of keeping promises , whatever it is , i guess it all boils down to the fact that we owe you an apology for the delay , but are grateful at the same time for the patience you've shown alongside the undying support . We are still unsure of the release of the album , but just have our fingers crossed and are hoping that it will be soon .

Thank you so much , God Bless .

Kaavish.

Vijender doesn't think Mallika hot

Vijender Singh, Olympic bronze medallist, is back home after winning another bronze medal at the Asian Championship in China last Week.

But he’s in the news for another sort of conquest – after making headlines for his meeting with Bips on a reality show, he’s now made an appearance on Salman Khan’s show with Mallika Sherawat. And he’s thrilled that she’s also from Haryana. “Woh bahut achhi hain,” he says about Mallika. “Aur sabse badi baat, woh bhi Jat hain! Last month, before leaving for China, Mallika and I were invited to be the special guests on Salman’s TV show. It was great fun. On the sets, Mallika and I spoke only in Haryanvi! I even sang a Haryanvi song for her – Gadhiwali Gajbhan Chhori, Rohtak Kahe Bomb, Bijli Si Tut Padi, Mare Gaye Hum ... ”

Bijli and all, eh? Does he find Mallika hot? He laughs, “Sab kehte hain Mallika hot hain, par mujhe woh garam nahin lagi. Theek hai, achhi hai ... ”

‘Theek’ might be an adjective that Mallika is unused to, but then, that’s what Vijender thinks. How did he like Salman? “This was the second time that I met Sallu bhai. Woh bahut achha banda hai. Humein ek minute ke liye bhi nahin laga ki main, Mallika aur Sallu shoot kar rahe hain. Bahut hi cool tha. Humein aisa lag raha tha ki hum ghar main baith kar baatein kar rahe hain. Salman was very sweet. He danced for both for us to a special song – Jat Yamla Pagla Deewana. Salman even asked me about boxing and my diet. We cracked a lot of jokes on the sets,” says Vijender.

The boxer himself is beginning to look a little bit like Salman himself, what with that toned physique ... “I’ve lost almost 7 kg and I’m working hard to get fit. Soon, I’ll get busy with my training for the September World Championship in Italy,” he says.
Despite focussing on his sport, he does have other things going on – he’s going to appear in a Bollywood film. “Ab baat chal rahi hai, dekho ... Next week, I’ll go to Mumbai to meet a film director.” As an afterthought, he adds, “Someday, you will see me as a politician. I would love to join politics. Dekho, aage aage kya hota hai.”

Sonakshi stands up for every star kid

Sonakshi Sinha is all set to make her mark in the industry with a film opposite Salman Khan...

Reports claim that you’ve walked out of your first film with Salman Khan...
Those are all rumours. I’m very much a part of the film. There is no question of me dropping out after having heard the script and given my nod. Salman’s almost like family; I have no reason to go back on my word.

Since you are very particular about the script, what kind of role have you given your nod to?
The film’s as-yet-untitled and my role is not of a girl-next-door. It’s a character that I wanted to play and I’m pretty excited about the same. I’m not doing a period film but a human drama — a love story.

Now that you are prepared for filmdom, what happens to your career as a designer?
I have studied fashion designing, so I do plan to pursue it. But it has to wait now, till the time I’m settled as an actor. I’m young and exploring a lot of possibilities.

You’ve lost a lot of weight to enter films...
I’ve lost 30 kilos, but that’s not for this particular film. I do yoga regularly to keep fit.

Are you on your way to achieve size zero?
No way! I prefer to be on the healthier side, the quintessential Indian woman is voluptuous and not skinny. But that doesn’t mean I’m against those striving for size zero. To each her own.

Coming back to films, would you be comfortable getting under the skin of bold characters?
No bold roles for me, even if the script demands. I’m not comfortable and need to keep my family background in mind. Wearing skimpy and revealing clothes isn’t really me.

What’s your take on star kids being launched by their parents?
There are a lot of expectations from star kids and they have to live up to them. It’s also true that they get leverage to springboard into movies. But no one’s born to star parents by choice. If they have parents from the industry, what’s wrong in that?

With your brothers also trying their luck in the industry, is it all films that you discuss at home?
We always talk about films. It was more or less certain that I would join films. It was only a matter of time. The discussions we have at home are always entertaining. Even my mother chips in with her suggestions.

How often did you accompany your father, Shatrughan Sinha, on his campaign trail?
Unfortunately, we could not accompany him everywhere. But we did join him whenever we could.

Bollywood’s latest: Turbanators

By S Shanthi

The turban seems to be slowly making its way into Bollywood. Whether the inspiration behind is prime minister Manmohan Singh or Akshay Kumar, who played a sardar in the blockbuster Singh Is Kinng, many actors are trying their luck with the pagdi these days. Salman Khan plays a sardar in Heroes, Saif Ali Khan plays one in his home production Love Aaj Kal and Ranbir Kapoor too is joining the bandwagon with the Shamit Amin-directed Rocket Singh-Salesman of The Year. Aamir Khan went a step ahead and played the role of a 60-year-old sardar in the new Tata Sky campaign.
The reason, film experts say, is the great share of revenue of the movies coming from international markets where the presence of Punjabis is significant. According to figures from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci), the total revenue from foreign box office has jumped from 5.3 per cent of the total revenue in 2005 to 9.8 per cent in 2008. And the US and Britain, with a huge Indian ethnic population, are now the two biggest foreign markets for Bollywood.
Others say that the reason could also be that scriptwriters’ love to explore different characters. “There was a time when negative roles were in vogue. Now it is portraying a Sikh. Scriptwriters keep experimenting with characters,” says filmmaker Ken Ghosh. “Different hair styles have been in vogue and so have the roles,” says film critic Taran Adarsh. “During Govinda’s time, many did comedy roles, then came negative roles. Then many liked performing the character of don, now a sardar role is getting popular,” he adds.
Experts say that while the sardar look suits many actors, some can carry off the style of language too. Before this, some actors have performed as Sikhs, but it hasn’t been a trend. For example Sunny Deol donned the role in Border as Major Kuldip Singh and in Gaddar as truck driver Tara Singh, Amitabh Bachchan in the movie Kohram as Col Balbir Singh Sodhi, Bobby Deol in 23rd March 1931: Shaheed and Ajay Devgan in The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, which won him a National Award for the best actor. However, many said that Amitabh Bachchan did not quite ‘fit’ as a sardar in terms the of the persona and neither did Ajay Devgan. “You can never say who is the best in a sardar role because it all depends on the character. Akshay, Salman, Saif everyone fits the bill. They all look good and act well. Sunny Deol looked very good in Border. His attitude was perfect too. It doesn’t depend on the person portraying the role, it depends more on the character and script. Akshay was a superhit because of the script,” adds Ghosh.
While Singh is Kinng turned out to be a blockbuster, the Sikh community, for Akshay Kumar’s half-shaven look, raised many objections. The controversy only ended after Akshay Kumar apologised to the Sikh community saying: “If I’ve made a mistake, lord forgive me and I will try to rectify my mistake.” He then flew down from South Africa to re-shoot parts of the film.
There is no such look as ‘perfect’ because in real life there are so many people from the same community who look different, says film trade analyst Komal Nahta. “Whatever you do, some people will always have objections because they want cheap publicity. Since this is a character of a particular community, it is more of a problem,” he says.
Whoever performs, with so many people donning pagdi, Singh seems to be the king in Bollywood for now.

Aamir , Akki n Salman: Not Hot Anymore

AAMIR KHAN, AKSHAY KUMAR and SALMAN KHAN

Unlike the rest of the world, recession may not have affected India as much, but the Hindi film industry is certainly feeling the pinch. And those who have been hit the hardest are the producers and actors.

Producers are not getting enough finances, their movies are not selling like hot cakes anymore amongst the distributors. Actors, too have been forced to cut down their prices. Both Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar whose films like GHAJINI (90 crores) and SINGH IS KINNG (60 crores) were sold for record sums (as indicated in the brackets), are finding the going tough.

CHECK OUT: Bollywood's hopes for June and July!

If trade sources are to be believed, Rajkumar Hirani's Aamir-Kareena starrer, 3 IDIOTS (one of the hottest releases of the year!), has still not been sold, despite being scheduled for a Christmas 2009 release. Reason; the film is not getting the required price of well over 100 crore being demanded by the producer.

The case is similar for Shree Ashtavinayak's BLUE, which stars the likes of Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta. This project too has remained unsold due to the price factor of over a 100 crore.

CHECK OUT: AKSHAY KUMAR Interview

Even Vipul Shah's LONDON DREAMS, which stars Ajay Devgan, Salman Khan and Asin is not finding any takers due to its astronomical price tag. A representative of a top international production and distribution company tells us (on condition of anonymity), ''They all have to come down by about 25-30 percent for the worldwide rights, as things are not as bright as they were about a year back.''

Well, there was a time when projects starring the top heroes were announced and all the territories used to close almost immediately as distributors would go for a hectic bidding to buy the films. But, alas things are not so rosy anymore and the film industry has to slog really hard to get back on its feet.

Asin is enjoying her pain!

Mumbai: Last year sensation and Ghajni famed southern beauty Asin seems to be enjoying her pain and gain situation these days. Recently, Asin has injured herself while practicing her martial arts for one of her upcoming movie and is trying to recover as soon as possible in her newly spacious apartment which according to buzz was gifted to her by her latest co-star and bollywood sexist ‘Khan’ Salman Khan.

When asked about it she with a charming smile said, “Yes, that’s true. It’s not just about the martial arts training. I’ve been brought up in an atmosphere where we don’t use artificial foods articles sweetners, spices, etc. In our home sugar is called ‘white poison’. We use only gur. I don’t take aerated drinks, chocolates, and junk food. And yes no allopathic medicines. Only Ayurveda.”

When asked about being called papa’s daughter Asin laughing said, “Everyone presumed I couldn’t take a step without my father just because he accompanied me everywhere. But even though I was the only child I was always taught to be self sufficient and independent.”

Asin was in news for her newly bought green, spacious and luxuries apartment recently, speaking about her pain and gain situation the southen hot beauty said, “ I’m in this spacious house all alone. Even the domestic help comes only during the day time. It’s just me and my injured leg, and guess what? I‘m just not feeling sorry for myself.”“But I am enjoying my enforced time at home. I’m making new friends, learning to be self dependent.”

After super blockbuster Ghajni Asin has been flooded with offers from many production houses. She will soon be seen in 19th Step directed by Bharat Bala and produced by Walt Disney Productions. In 19th Step, Asin plays the role of a princess who is adept at Kalaripayattu martial arts and also she is working with Salman Khan in London Dreams. So we wish Asin happy and soon recovery!

Hindi Pokiri soon

The long wait for the Hindi version of Pokiri is over, Boney Kapoor has announced the date for its release and it is scheduled on the 17th of August. This announcement brings to an end the ordeal the film is going through as this film should have been released at least a year ago.

Now the focus lights are turning on Salman Khan and many are curious to figure out as to how he has done this film. Comparisons with Mahesh Babu seem so unavoidable. But Salman has already answered this question, he says he has not seen the Telugu original and so he has not imitated any of the mannerisms of Mahesh.

Prabhu Deva too has been careful and he too has not imitated Puri Jagannath. Keeping this entire mind, it seems like the Hindi version may be a tad different from the Telugu version and so it may be fun to watch!!

Claudia wants to be a Hindu

Claudia Ciesla of the 38DD fame couldn’t make a mark in her recent film. The reason’s simple — her assets and her statements on Salman Khanand Abhishek Bachchan garnered more media headlines than her histrionics!

Well, the German model’s in the news again. This time it’s for her decision to convert to Hinduism. So what prompted her to take this step?

I have many Indian friends who are into this religion and I’ve discussed Indian philosophy and the Hindu religion and its gods,” Claudia told BT.

I love the aspects of tolerance, I love the thought of Karma and reincarnation. I’m a very liberal person and it comes close to my way of thinking. Someone gifted me a Ganesh statue and I believe Ganesh will help and support me,” she said.

Extreme makeover of Salman Khan!

This is probably the first time you'll see Salman Khan in the avatar of a boorish cop. In brother Arbaaz Khan's maiden venture as a producer,
Salman plays a corrupt policeman from Uttar Pradesh.
The film, Dabangg, will be directed by Anurag Kashyap's brother, Abhinav Kashyap. Dabangg is the Hindi word for fearless, and that describes Salman's character in the film aptly.

After a long time, Salman will discard his 'cool dude' aura and will step into a role that demands him to be uncouth and unpolished. He will master the UP slang and accent.
He played a small-time goon in Tere Naam (2003), but this role, Arbaaz says, “...is terrific. Salman's fans have never seen him like this before. Besides, I haven't cast Salman because he is my brother, but he fits the character perfectly.
When Abhinav offered me a role in the film, I immediately wanted to produce it. For long, I had been toying with the idea of turning producer. This was just the excuse I needed to take the plunge.” Arbaaz does have a role in Dabangg. But Salman, of course, is the star of the film.

The film sees the debut of Shatrughan Sinha's daughter Sonakshi. Talking about the unusual casting, Arbaaz says, “There's no point in casting a heroine who has already been seen four times with Salman. I wanted to cast a stunning new girl and Sonakshi fits the bill. She has lost a lot of weight. She still needs to lose a little more.”

Katrina will always be a sweetheart: Neil

Contrary to the rumors in the film industry that Salman Khan is upset with Neil Nitin Mukesh for calling Katrina 'sweetheart', Neil has clarified that the rumor is baseless as there are no differences between him and Salman on this issue.

Last week, the rumor mills were abuzz with the talk of a tiff between Salman and Neil. Apparently , Sallu had wanted to speak to Neil about something and he called him from girlfriend Katrina Kaif's number.

Neil, who has a habit of calling his friends 'sweetheart' answered the phone with 'hey sweetheart', thinking it is Katrina, who he is good friends with since they worked together in New York.

However, friendship between his girlfriend and another man is not something that goes down well with Salman, and true to type, he turned cold and told Neil to stop calling 'other's girlfriends sweethearts'.

When asked if Salman has ever warned him of dire consequences if he continues to call Katrina 'a sweetheart' Neil says, "Katrina will always be a sweetheart and it's all baseless to say that Salman pulled me up for calling her a sweetheart. Anyone who is dear to me and who I consider very close to my heart, I call him/her my sweetheart. I still call her my sweetheart. Salman doesn't mind it at all. But let me tell you one thing that Salman Khan is a bigger sweetheart than Katrina."

Rubbishing the whole issue Neil says that nothing of this sort ever happened between him and Salman. In fact he went on to say that he really had a blast with Salman while shooting for Dus Ka Dam. "We had a great time. I really enjoyed Dus Ka Dum with Salman and that's why I say that Salman is a bigger sweetheart than Katrina.", added the New York actor.

Sridevi gets candid with Salman Khan

Salman’s stint as the TV show host is getting bigger and better. Now, he has invited the media shy yesteryear actress and diva Sridevi to his ‘10 Ka Dum’.

What’s amusing is that this is Sridevi’s first ever appearance on a TV show. In the past, the actress has said no to various talk shows, including Karan Johar ’s ‘Koffee with Karan’ and Vir Sanghvi’s show. Her husband Boney Kapoor cites her shy nature as the prime reason for her reluctance.

But when Salman invited her on his ‘10 Ka Dum’, she couldn’t say no, because Sridevi is very fond of the swashbuckling Khan and the two also share the same hobby – painting. Sridevi is also the producer of Salman’s next release Wanted . And Sallu, during his initial years in Bollywood around 1990s, had also romanced Sri in two films, ‘Chand Ka Tukda’ and ‘Chandramukhi’.

The show will have both Sridevi and her husband Boney Kapoor. According to sources, the husband-wife duo spent quality time on the sets of ‘10 Ka Dum’. It’s said that the episode is a part of promoting the film ‘Wanted’ but it also brings out the camaraderie between Sri and Salman.

To surprise Sridevi, Salman even got two of her paintings on the show and showed it to all. And it’s a known fact that Salman has gifted many of his own paintings to Boney and Sri.

Article in Boston Herald:Ties bind Strings to Pakistan

By Martin Caballero

Faisal Kapadia may be thousands of miles from Pakistan, but his country is never far from his mind.

Kapadia is one-half of the Karachi-based pop group Strings, which performs Thursday at Berklee Performance Center. Since forming in 1988, Kapadia and partner Bilal Maqsood’s work as ambassadors of Pakistani pop have made Strings one of the Asian subcontinent’s most popular acts. But with Islamic fundamentalism on the rise and the Pakistani government embroiled in a military and political struggle against Taliban insurgents, it’s no time for pop music as escapism.

“If you have a disturbance in any part of the country, the mindset of the whole country changes,” said Kapadia, 38, by phone from Washington, D.C. “People are not in the mood to go out to concerts in Karachi because people are dying. The situation has affected everyone, but especially the entertainment industry within Pakistan.”

Strings started out as a quartet, releasing two successful albums before disbanding in 1992. After an eight-year hiatus, in which Kapadia worked for an advertising firm, he reunited with Maqsood in 2000.

Since then, Strings has released three albums, worked on film soundtracks and picked up numerous honors, including MTV Asia awards for Best Band and Best Album. Without becoming overtly political, Kapadia and Maqsood use their popularity to speak out about social and political issues.

In 2006, they released “Beirut,” a track that used the Israeli bombing of the Lebanese capital city as a springboard to discuss human rights.

“ ‘Beirut’ was really about the whole world, not just the city,” Kapadia said. “The world wasn’t like this 15 or 20 years back. People have lost emotions. We turn on the TV and we see people dying, and after five minutes we just change the channel and go back to our world, which is really sad. We used to feel bad about such things.”

That same year, Kapadia and Maqsood became UNICEF ambassadors for HIV and AIDS awareness in Pakistan, traveling to high-risk areas to speak about prevention and treatment.

“It was never on our agenda to be socially or politically conscious as a band,” Kapadia said. “But when you see that there is some kind of power you have as a musician, it becomes very important to respond, because we have a responsibility to give back to society.”

Not surprisingly, Kapadia counts Bono and U2 as his biggest influence.

After completing this U.S. tour, which includes several charity concerts for the Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, Strings will turn their attention back home. Along with other Pakistani artists, Kapadia and Maqsood are organizing a fund-raiser concert to assist Pakistanis who have been displaced by the fighting with the Taliban.

“The current situation in Pakistan is very disturbing and very depressing,” Kapadia said. “We hope it goes back to normal soon. Whatever we can contribute to help the situation, we would love to.”

Strings, at Berklee Performance Center, Thursday. Tickets: $25-$100; 617-747-2261

Hadiqa Kiani returns to the limelight with her brand new album-Instep Review

“I know six years is a big break. But I never walked away from music. I never released an album because I wanted to do a different album, something I have never done before.”

– Hadiqa Kiani returns to the limelight with her brand new album, Aasmaan and takes on the experimental genre of dance and RnB

Maheen Sabeeh
Karachi

From pop beats to the dance floor…

“This is a magical moment,” said Hadiqa Kiani at the press launch of her latest record, Aasmaan. It’s been six years since Hadiqa released her last record, Rung. She was not AWOL completely.

There have been collaborations, a slew of them in fact in the last few years. Whether it is a full-fledged English language album like Rough Cut (with Aamir Zaki) or anti-terrorism tune like ‘Yeh Hum Nahin’ or the groovy ‘Mehr Ma’ with Khiza, Hadiqa has been around.

But six years is a big break for fans, especially in an industry where female musicians are rare. And even as the numbers are slowly rising, it is still a predominantly male dominated environment.

“I know six years is a big break. But I never walked away from music. I never released an album because I wanted to do a different album, something I have never done before,” said Hadiqa while speaking with Instep Today.

This maybe Hadiqa’s first album in six years but she has been busy doing other things including singing in languages as varied as Chinese, Turkish, Persian and Pushto. The reflections can be heard on the new album where Hadiqa sings not just in Urdu but also Pushto and Persian.

It’s too soon to give a verdict to the album. But if the first single, ‘Sohnya’ is anything to go by, fans and music critics are in for a surprise.

The video, screened at the press conference, is directed by Sohail Javed. And it is a simple video which serves as a platform for Hadiqa. Seeing Hadiqa move with the beats is a sight to see.

Even though ‘Sohnye’ is a groovy number, there is something inherently local about it. Hadiqa’s vocals soar very high and the usage of dhols has given the song a slight edge. It doesn’t sound like a Western imitation even though it remains true to the ethos of dance music. It hasn’t been ripped off Western beats like songs by bands such as Circle of Trust.

The superstar is back

Hadiqa Kiani, alongside her brother Irfan Kiani (who has produced the album) was a sight to see as she mingled with the press, before and after the press conference.

When she was speaking with the press, Hadiqa floored pretty much everyone when she said, “I know that its not easy to take out time but I’m grateful to all of you for being here. And if you can take out time for me, I can do the same for all of you.”

And Hadiqa made sure that no one was forgotten. From the names featured on the album such as UK-based JKD or sound engineer Kashif Ejaz, Hadiqa mentioned everyone. Also present at the press conference was VJ Naveen Waqar who confessed that she was a “Hadiqa fan”.

Doctor Akbar Yezdani, CEO of Fire Records stated, “I think a lot of hard work has gone into this album. Hadiqa is the female pop icon in Pakistan and we welcome her.”

And finally President of Geo Television Network, Imran Aslam spoke and he accurately portrayed the importance of Hadiqa Kiani to Pakistan and the world at large.

“Is Shor Mein Yeh Awaaz Nahie Gumti (Amidst all the noise, this voice is never lost),” he said. “Hadiqa is versatile and she is modern yet traditional and that is a great achievement. She doesn’t sing on DAT. And when she performs, people enjoy her energy.”

The times are a-changing and so should music

“I don’t think we could’ve done better than this,” said Irfan Kiani while speaking with Instep Today. Both Hadiqa and Irfan maintain that while they grew up on Beegees and Pink Floyd, the times have changed and they are moving with the beat.

“We picked up this genre and there is a market for it. It took us years to release it but we’ve done it. Our surroundings are such that we can’t ignore them. The unstable situation affects everyone. But if one chooses to not release an album, that decision is like giving into the agonizing factors,” says Hadiqa firmly.

And Hadiqa was also very forthcoming about the letter (see box below) which first released on Facebook and is now rotating in the world of cyberspace and mentioned among other things, her divorce and her return to the limelight. Hadiqa did write it and there were some solid reasons.

“I was getting calls and queries about everything and that’s when I wrote the note. I have gotten divorced. Its legal and its been a year. My mother suffers from paralysis. She has been for the last three years and I have to be there for her. I couldn’t move to the UK,” she says.

Meanwhile Hadiqa is enjoying her role as a mother immensely. The new album is dedicated to her son who she says, “The best thing in my life. Life has changed and gotten better because of him.”

She maybe a mother but Hadiqa is nowhere near calling it quits. Not only is she making a return with an album but she is also a judge on the show, LG Awaaz Banaye Star. And for her the show is important because “it is a student-based”. In other words, the contestants are young students and to Hadiqa, this is how talent will develop in Pakistan.

And until that happens, there is always Hadiqa…

The good and bad news

Just a few weeks prior to the release of this album, Hadiqa Kiani wrote a note on Facebook to answer queries from her fans who had been wondering where the singer was. And here’s what the letter said…

Hello everybody!

Good news is that I will be appearing as a judge in an upcoming music reality show on Geo TV for the next one year (starting very soon).

It’s a big show sponsored by LG Electronics. Another good news is that my album will be out very soon as two videos are ready and two more are on the editing table (will be ready by the end of this month).

My dear fans, I had been through tough times in my life because of my mothers paralysis in 2005 and my second divorce with Farid Sarwary in 2008 (mainly because of the distance). I could not settle down in UK leaving my sick mother behind.

Anyways God has always been very kind and I feel so blessed to be the mother of my angel Naaday Ali.

I have worked really hard on my album along with amazing musicians of Pakistan, UK and Belgium.

After the release of my album I’ll start touring and will get a chance to meet most of you. Also my official website Hadiqa Kiani will reopen on the day of the release of my album.

Thank you very much for being on my side and giving me support all the way during my tough times.

God Bless you all.

Luv

Hadiqa Kiani

Katrina and Neil Nitin Mukesh on Dus Ka Dum 2 soon....

Finally Salman has proved that he can’t stay away from his girlfriend Katrina Kaif for long. He is busy shooting round the clock and is not getting time to spend with his lady love. But the lover in Salman found a solution and invited her with Neil Nitin Mukesh to play Dus ka Dum. Katrina and Neil came down to promote their upcoming film New York.

A source informs, “It was very surprising to see Katrina Kaif in a salwaar-suit, she was looking very pretty. She came down with Neil Nitin Mukesh to promote their new film New York. There is no doubt that Neil is a dude and has a great sense of humor. But this episode wasn’t as good as the previous episodes of Dus Ka Dum but still people will enjoy it. Katrina won the knock- out round and played further, she won Rs. 1, 00,000.”

Frustrated with the constant delay in shoot schedules, the source added, “This is the third time that the shoot has been cancelled. We were supposed to shoot on 10 June but again the shoot got delayed because there was no celebrity guest. We have covered all the big stars for the last season and the channel doesn’t want to repeat them.”

But then wasn’t Katrina a part of the show in the last season? Well. Well. Some stars do have a great repeat value and we agree Kat is one of them.

Winners of the 2009 IIFAs

Even though there were a number of big time celebs that weren't in attendance, the 2009 IIFAs in Macau, China went down with out a hitch this past weekend. The tenth annual awards show was held in China at the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel with the stars no doubt, enjoying the lap of luxury. COKE STUDIO - The great gig in the sky

Coke Studio returns to our screens again with its second season tonight. The playing bill for the first episode is explosive. With performances from Saieen Zahoor, Atif Aslam, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, Javed Bashir, Noori, Zeb and Haniya, it is a celebration of Pakistani music, an exploration of the sound of the soil and true fusion to remember for years to come. Instep takes a close look at the first episode… By Maheen Sabeeh ‘Aik Alif’ – Saieen Zahoor and Noori Saieen Zahoor is magnificent and so are Noori. They are diverse and completely different from each other as artists, and it is this distinctiveness that gives this collaboration such a razor sharp edge. The poetry hails from Baba Bulley Shah and it speaks of looking within for answers, not outside. And breathing musical life in this poetry is this fusion. Ali Hamza picks up the banjo while Ali Noor stays true to his guitar and Saieen Zahoor weaves mystical magic with his thunderous, hypnotic voice. Brothers Ali Noor and Ali Hamza have given countless hits but never before have we seen them in such spirit. This is Noori experimenting with Coke Studio and it works. Its breezy like fresh air. Excellent stuff. “Can you imagine what this will be like when young Noori fans see them with Saieen Zahoor?” asks Rohail Hyatt. “Because Noori are cool and they are singing with Saieen, suddenly Saieen will become cool to some who do not know him at all,” Rohail points out. Noori are not just about rock ‘n’ roll…

and Saieen Zahoor can play with the best of them. This collaboration, is therefore, a must for all. ‘Paimona’ – Zeb and Haniya featuring Sadiq Sameer It may be in Pashto/Darri but this is one of the most beautiful songs we’ve ever heard. For two young players in the industry, Zeb and Haniya have managed to charm everyone with their talent, and at Coke Studio, they do so with exceptional style and command. ‘Paimona’ is not only haunting and soft but adding more flavour to the song is the addition of Sadiq Sameer on the Iranian rubab, a string instrument that instantly reminds one of Pakistan’s Northern provinces, green hills and the valleys. Sadiq hails from Peshawar and was brought in by Zeb and Haniya to Coke Studio. And his inclusion in the song has definitely given it a more majestic feel. “With everything that is happening in Swat, this song, its feel… it hits close to home. Its good to include this sound too,” says Rohail Hyatt. It is a befitting tribute in these tremulous times. ‘Aj Latha Naeeo’ – Javed Bashir We know him mostly as the singer for Mekaal Hasan Band but this year he is one of the Eastern voices to watch out for. In the opening episode of Coke Studio, this rendition of ‘Aj Latha Naeeo’ only amplifies this fact. “What this man… Javed Bashir… can do, no one else can do it,” says Rohail Hyatt, as we discuss this tune. ‘Aj Latha Naeeo’ was sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and while Javed is certainly no Nusrat, he is indeed a voice that can be fiery and somber in equal grace. He does it like a pro because he is one. And at Coke Studio, the individual that is Javed Bashir shines out. Khamaaj’ – Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan One of the most distinguished voices in the music industry, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan makes a spectacular debut at Coke Studio this year. Taking the original form of the raag that is khamaaj, the song has been stripped, ripped inside the studio and re-created. The result remains a version that will, in all likelihood, become a favourite in the coming months. Slower, moodier and grabbing, it is truly stunning. “It might not be a version that some will like. But it is closer to the form,” says Rohail Hyatt. ‘Khamaaj’ remains one of the big hits of modern music in Pakistan but at Coke Studio, the regal depth of this song is explored and who better than Shafqat himself doing the honours?

‘Jalpari’ – Atif Aslam Another debut at Coke Studio this year includes superstar singer Atif Aslam. He may be known for his fiery and electrifying stage performances and is considered a huge icon but at Coke Studio, it’s his voice that takes precedence over everything else. Picking up the title track of his debut album, Atif rolls with the music like a complete sport and has fun to boot. The song is ‘Jalpari’, a super popular tune already but never before has Atif sounded this groovy and earthy. And this is experimentation again at its peak. Atif begins with ‘Jalpari’ and lands in a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song (that we will not reveal) and he does it with a natural comfort. “There is definitely something about that voice…” Rohail Hyatt trails off when we speak of Atif. Indeed, there is something to that voice…
