Sneak peek at Pyaar Impossible

After the success of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi last year, Yash Raj Films is all geared up for year 2009 with a bang. The surprising part this year, however, is that, the banner which was known for keeping their projects under wrap, has been more than open giving out the look of their under production films.

After revealing the look of Ranbir Kapoor in Rocket Singh - Salesman Of The Year, YRF has now unveiled the look of Uday-Priyanka starrer Pyaar Impossible. Bollywood Hungama brings you the first ever exclusive look of Pyaar Impossible.

The film is a romantic comedy with Uday Chopra and Priyanka Chopra in lead and is directed by Jugal Hansraj. It is a romantic comedy from the Yash Raj banner. The story of the film is about, Abhay and Alisha. Abhay is a nerdy, awkward, socially challenged and bespectacled geek and Alisha is the epitome of beauty that any man would willingly rip his heart out for!

And when these two worlds collide you get: 1 Beauty + 1 Geek = Pyaar Impossible!

Bollywood goes global to sell film stakes

Foreign private equity investors, studios and film funds will be given a chance to invest directly in Bollywood films at the project level as the world's most prolific movie-making industry goes into capital-raising mode.

UTV Software Communications, the entertainment group controlled by the Indian entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala, and in which Disney also holds a stake, said Bollywood could raise up to $1bn over the next two years from selling stakes in its huge "slate" of film projects.

UTV, which has a London-listed film unit, is planning to sell equity stakes of up to 50 per cent in individual projects or groups of projects from its slate of 25 movies and is looking for investment in the range of $100m.

"For Indian cinema to go to the next level, there's a one-word answer, which is scale," Mr Screwvala told the Financial Times.

"And we'll never get scale unless we start tapping the international market for co-funding."

Hindi-language Bollywood and its Indian regional language cousins constitute one of the world's largest film industries, producing more than 1,000 films a year.

But Bollywood has yet to fully emerge from its roots as a cottage industry based in Mumbai's northern seaside suburbs.

In 2007, Indian movies earned about $2bn at the box office compared with about $27bn for Hollywood.

But no one doubts Bollywood's potential. Indian box office earnings grew 15 per cent in 2007 compared with 2 per cent growth in the US.

Mr Screwvala, who is the only Bollywood producer to have been involved with the release of a number of Hollywood films, including Namesake (2006) and The Happening (2008), said the Indian film industry was improving its quality.

Its international appeal has been enhanced by the success of Slumdog Millionaire - the Oscar-winning British film about a Mumbai slum-dweller who rises from poverty to win the Indian version of the global television quiz show Who Wants to be a Millionaire ? - which has generated interest in Indian subject matter.

"The inflection point for Hollywood, when Hollywood really grew, was when the 'JP Morgans' entered the space," Mr Screwvala said.

He said aside from private equity operators, there were a lot of $1bn-$3bn film funds that have been floated around the world and which need film project slates to invest in.

"We believe if you can tie up with those over the next year or six months, this will be the next step for taking scale up in India overall."

Mr Screwvala said investors would expect the returns typical of the successful Bollywood operators, or an internal rate of return of about 20-40 per cent.

Biren Ghose, executive director of Eros International Films, another Bollywood house with a London listing, said his studio was involved in 14 movies this year that are a mixture of acquisitions, films developed in-house and co-productions.

"We are open to the model," Mr Ghose said of the idea of inviting equity investments into Eros's slate.

Bollywood stalwarts felicitated at 46th annual Marathi awards

Pune, May 31 (ANI): Top Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, veteran actor Rekha and oscar-winner AR Rahman was felicitated at the 46th annual Marathi awards held here last evening.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan presented the prestigious 'Raj Kapoor awards' at the Bollywood stalwarts for the special contribution to the Indian cinema.

The award has been named after the legendary film Bollywood personality Raj Kapoor.

Bollywood icon Rekha, who is considered to be one of the evergreen Bollywood actresses, looked as scintillating as ever in Indian traditional drape and thanked the State Government and public for the honour.

Addressing the gathering, Khan thanked the Maharashtra Government for his fame and livelihood and thanked Marathi people for appreciating his work.

"I am extremely happy that the award and the honour has been conferred by Maharashtra which is my motherland. I cannot even express how happy I am," said Khan.

Khan's last film 'Ghajini' was one of the highest grosser in the year 2008 and was accorded with several awards for his movie based on dyslexia 'Taare Zameen Par'.is first appearance on the silver screen was as a child actor in his uncle Nasir Hussain's film 'Yaadon Ki Baaraat' way back in 1973.

Oscar award winning music director Rahman was felicitated along with the technical team of 'Slumdog Millioanire'. He and also sang movie's award-winning song 'Jai ho' on stage.

Child actor Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail was also present at the event.

Rahman fetched two Oscar for rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing in a TV game show. The movie scooped eight Academy Awards earlier this year.

Bollywood is worth about 85 billion rupees and is forecast to more than double to 175 billion rupees by 2011.

Despite being so prolific-Bollywood makes more than 800 films a year-the industry's revenues stand at half of what the Walt Disney studio made in box office revenues in 2006. (ANI)

North American theatres hurt by Bollywood dispute

Even as Slumdog Millionaire and its Bollywood-inspired style has made a whole swath of people more aware of Indian cinema, North American theatres specializing in Bollywood films are hurting badly.

A dispute over revenue sharing between Bollywood film producers and the operators of multiplex cinemas within India is now entering its third month and has cut off the flow of new Bollywood pictures. For the small Indian cinemas dotting North America half a world away, this has meant a sudden dearth of major films.

"It has really taken a toll on us," said Farzan Dehmoubed, vice-president of Golden Theatres, a small chain in the Toronto area. This includes the Albion Cinema, which specializes in Bollywood, and the Woodside Cinema, which has had to switch to first-run Hollywood fare.

"It has really been a difficult time, and it has extended a lot longer than everybody had expected. We all thought by June, for sure, this would be resolved. Right around now is the time when some of the biggest movies of the year should be releasing," Mr. Dehmoubed said.

The Raja, Vancouver's Bollywood specialty cinema, announced earlier in May that it would close for half of the month because of the strike in Mumbai. It hopes to reopen in June. The switch by the Woodside Cinema in Toronto to Hollywood films might be permanent if the strike continues, Mr. Dehmoubed said. In New York, the Eagle Theater and its Bollywood films have gone dark for good.

Although these are relatively small cinemas here and there across North America, the theatres are important cultural anchors for large South Asian communities.

"The main reason we've tried to keep the Albion and Woodside open is to make sure there's a constant flow of [South Asian] movies, and somewhere people can go to enjoy their movies," Mr. Dehmoubed said. "Without Albion and Woodside, a lot of these movies wouldn't even release in Toronto. The mainstream theatres do sometimes open to Bollywood movies, but they seem to be only interested in the big, big [Indian] blockbuster movies."

Estimates are that the Mumbai-based industry has lost more than $3.5-billion (U.S.) since April. The problem is that Bollywood producers want to make the massive Indian film industry more financially transparent, as opposed to impressions that business is done behind closed doors and marked by increasingly unreliable investment from private backers. The producers want a system more like the one Hollywood studios share with exhibitors. The producers are seeking half of the box-office take from multiplex cinemas that are geared more to middle-class Indians. The cinema operators are balking.

The timing of the dispute is deliberate. As with Hollywood films, summer is the season for Indian blockbusters. No new films means no major summer releases, such as the highly anticipated New York, featuring Bollywood superstar John Abraham, and Kambakkht Ishq starring Akshay Kumar.

The Albion Cinema has been playing smaller Punjabi and Tamil movies to keep the doors open and maintain its South Asian emphasis. Ticket prices have also been reduced.

"We are just trying to get people back in and come and see the movies we currently have," Mr. Dehmoubed said. "It has really become difficult to keep bringing these movies [here], with the way piracy is going. That's also affecting us heavily. With Bollywood, there's a lot of piracy happening, not just in Canada, but throughout the U.S."

Bollywood's Bachchan shuns Australia honour over attacks

MUMBAI, May 31 (Reuters) - Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has turned down an honorary doctorate from an Australian university to protest a recent spate of attacks on Indian students studying there.

The attacks, which Indian media have called raced-based, have caused some diplomatic discomfort, with the Indian government summoning the Australian ambassador last week to convey its concern and urge action. [ID:nDEL454231]

The prime ministers of the two countries also discussed the attacks that have dominated newspaper and television headlines in India during the past week.

Bachchan, arguably India's biggest superstar, said in a blog post on Saturday he would not accept the honour from the Queensland University of Technology, a decision he said he took after consulting readers of his blog (bigb.bigadda.com).

"My conscience is profoundly unsettled at the moment and there seems to be a moral disjuncture between the suffering of these students and my own approbation," Bachchan, 66, wrote in a letter to the university which he posted on his blog.

"Under the prevailing circumstances I find it inappropriate at this juncture, to accept this decoration."

Four Indian students were attacked with a screwdriver by a gang at a Melbourne party last weekend. One of the victims remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Another Indian student was attacked in what appeared to be a robbery, and there were three other attacks in early May, including two on Indian taxi drivers.

Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan have not separated

Mumbai, May 31, 2009: Katrina Kaif says she and Salman have not separated and that they are still a couple. There are rumours galore linking Katrina to one and all in Bollywood including Ranbir Kapoor and John Abraham.

This is notwithstanding the fact that the two male heartthrobs of Bollywood are going steady with their girl friends.

In the eye of mounting media reports Deepika said that she and Salman Khan remain a couple and that the story that Salman was throwing her belongings out of house were absurd.

Earlier the rumour mongers had spread rumours that Katrina Kaif, Salman Khan’s girlfriend of six years had vowed never to work with Salman Khan. The rumour came out after the alleged verbal duel between Salman Khan and another big Khan of the industry Shah Rukh Khan during the birthday bash of Katrina Kaif.

The birthday bash was thrown by Salman Khan for his girlfriend. He wanted to celebrate the occasion in a big way as Katrina Kaif’s mother and sister were in the town. He wanted to make it as memorable as he could.

But alas his plans went sour and in front of who is who of the Bollywood. It became memorable but for all the wrong reasons.

And since then began the long list of rumours. But luckily the two were never carried away by rumours.

Everyone knows that initially Katrina Kaif got many of the roles due to her beau Salman Khan who sort of forced many directors who were desirous to cast him in their films. Salman’s presence almost ensures the success of films. Even if some of his films may not be super hits at box office but they always give a decent return to producers.

Jolie-Pitt fighting over Jennifer Aniston

Is Jennifer Aniston, the 'other woman' in the Brangelina story? If latest reports are to be believed, Hollywood's 'It' couple are "at each other's throats" over Pitt's renewed closeness to his ex-wife.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had quashed rumours that their relationship is in trouble by putting up a united front at the Cannes premiere of Inglourious Basterds with Pitt claiming that he has never been happier in his entire life.

But latest reports claim that the show of togetherness was just a facade and the couple are heading towards splitsville as Jolie is upset over Pitt's renewed friendship with Friends star Jennifer Aniston, whom he had divorced in 2005.

"Angie doesn't want to be a laughing stock because the world knows how close he and Jen are right now and how often they talk. But Brad wants to remain friends with Jennifer and told Angie he wouldn't cut off contact," a source said.

The couple have been at the centre of split rumours after reports that he secretly met with Aniston last month infuriating Jolie. The actress had reportedly even threatened to cancel her Cannes visit unless Pitt promised to cut all ties with his ex, but Pitt refused to do so.

Onlookers at the Cannes premiere said that once the cameras stopped clicking, Jolie's smile disappeared and she furiously ran up the stairs of the theatre leaving a flustered Brad to run after her.

Aishwarya to perform at IIFA again

Aishwarya Rai is all set to dazzle audiences with her dance moves at the 10th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards night in Macau, China, next month - her second such appearance at the glamorous event.

She had enthralled audiences by dancing to hit song Kajra re at Amsterdam in 2005. She will perform at The Venetian-Macau Resort on the night of June 13, an IIFA press statement said.

Aishwarya's father-in-law, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, is the brand ambassador of IIFA. Also performing at the event will be Sonam Kapoor, who will make her on-stage debut, and Kareena Kapoor, who will show off her belly dancing skills.

Bollywood actors Boman Irani and Riteish Deshmukh, who had the audience in splits with their humour at the awards last year in Bangkok, will play hosts to the glitzy cine event again in Macau. Joining the two would be beauty queen-turned-actress Lara Dutta.

The three-day IIFA Weekend will be held from June 11-13 and is expected to draw over 500 luminaries from the Indian film industry.

On why Macau was chosen as the destination for celebrating a decade of IIFA, the orhanisers said they hoped it would "end the deadlock between India and China over the exchange of cinema".

"We feel it's (Macau) the Las Vegas of the East. In this 10th year of IIFA's existence we wanted either the US or China to be our venue," said Sabbas Joseph, one of the directors of Wizcraft, the organisers of the event.

"We chose China because we feel it could be a gateway for Indian cinema to the West. We also hope to end the deadlock between India and China over the exchange of cinema. We haven't come away from one venue without opening up doors for the India film industry. We are confident this would be the case in China," he added.

Katrina denies split with Salman: Reports

Bollywood's reigning queen Katrina Kaif has dismissed the reports of her split with beau of four years -- Salman Khan.

The news have been abuzz that the Welcome girl and Sallu miyan had formally called it quits but the actress has vehemently denied such reports and has termed them as baseless rumours.

She has rubbished reports that Salman had thrown all her belongings from his apartment and rather said she and Salman have always lived separately.

According to reports, Katrina also said that her photograph was still hanging in Salman's room.

Reports of a split between the couple came out after Katrina started mingling with her New York co-star John Abraham and Salman became close to German model Claudia Ceisla.

Now, let's wait and watch until Katrina and Salman officially announce the D-Day.

Bipasha Basu's Love Making Scene in Hollywood

Bipasha Basu is trying to be hotter and it looks like she's going to be on fire in a sultry lovemaking scene with Hollywood's Billy Zane.

Bipasha will be starring alongside Billy Zane in "Chimera," an upcoming Hollywood film directed by Tapan Saha and Daniel Silverman. They want to start shooting the film in July if everything goes as planned, but it depends on Billy Zane's availability.

"Chimera" is a paranormal thriller, a genre that Bipasha Basu has dabbled in once before in "Raaz." What Bipasha is not familiar with is such a steamy scene as the one that's planned for "Chimera."

It looks like Bipasha wants to make her Hollywood debut big, and she's going to with this passionate bedroom scene with Billy Zane.

"Bipasha has a lovemaking scene that Indian cinema hasn't seen her doing before," said Tapan Saha.

Tapan Saha reveals a piece of the plot that lovemaking scene is only a small but zesty part of. Zane will play an American doctor who goes to work in India. Bipasha is one of his patients that he treats.

Victor Bannerjee should be playing Bipasha's father, and the directors want Shabana Azmi to play her mother. They also want to cast Anil Kapoor as Billy Zane's Indian friend, yet none of these actors have confirmed.

It's not certain that Bipasha will be playing this role, but Billy Zane is enthusiastic about potentially acting with her. And we know that it would be quite the Hollywood initiation for Bipasha who will loosen inhibitions for "Chimera" with a love scene that in edge will surpass the love scenes she did in the past with Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham.

How do you think Bollywood will react and how do you react to this? What is next for Bipasha Basu, could she get any hotter? Let us know below.

Katrina Kaif Has a Stalker

Someone is trying to win over Katrina Kaif's heart, and it isn't Salman Khan. Rather, it's a stalker, yes, a stalker. Katrina Kaif has fans all over the world but this one got a little bit too close for comfort. The stalker had been creeping outside of the actress' flat for a couple of days, probably hoping to get a glimpse of Katrina Kaif and no one noticed him. Getting bolder, the stalker snuck past security and found his way to Katrina Kaif's doorstep. Facing questions from Kaif's staff, the stalker said that Katrina asked him to come to her.

The staff made the smart move to call on Katrina's manager who told the stalker that Katrina wasn't home but to come back later. When the stalker did return, the manager noticed that his behavior was strange and decided to call the cops. Police gave the man a stern warning but that didn't deter his efforts. He came back to the apartment but after realizing that security was increased (Katrina asked the building association to do so) he walked away. He sure as hell seems determined. Come on with looks like hers who wouldn't want to spend a few precious moments with Katrina.

Now we're left to wonder, what kind of cheap security does this building have that a stalker can make their way to the doorstep of one of Bollywood's biggest stars. And who knows, maybe the efforts of this stalker will make Salman Khan a little jealous and he'll get back with Katrina. But we're glad that Katrina Kaif is alright. Her next film to be released, "New York," is expected to be a summer blockbuster.

So let us know what you think about the Kaif stalker situation.

Deepika Padukone To Star in Corporate Sequel

After the success of the 2006 film 'Corporate' starring Bipasha Basu, director Madhur Bhandarkar sets his eyes on having actress Deepika Padukone to continue the story in 'Corporate 2". Last year, it was reported that Bipasha Basu would return for the sequel, but now the makers of the film are opting for the young and talented Deepika to play the role this time around, which is the reason why she was approached for the main role.

Since the film had an open ending left to the viewer's imagination, director Madhur Bhandarkar had expressed a desire to make 'Corporate 2'. Bipasha, as the female lead character in 'Corporate' received praise for her worthy performance in the film that had an open ending which showed Bipasha left alone with her daughter fighting for justice. Bipasha received nominations at the Filmfare, Star Screen, and Zee Cine Awards for her compelling character.

The sequel will feature Deepika entering and digging deeper into the corporate world as well as exposing the malevolence that has become an essential part of the business culture in the times of aggressive competition. She gets even with those responsible for Bipasha's downfall.

Let's just hope this decision adds a dash of exuberant youth to the character and turns out to be equally fruitful for the makers this time too!

Deepika's next upcoming release will be opposite Saif Ali Khan in Imtiaz Ali's 'Love Aaj Kal' which was featured as a promo at the IPL Cricket Event. Bipasha's next release will be Sanjay Gupta's 'Pankh'. Madhur Bhandarkar is currently working on his next film 'Jail' which stars Neil Nitin Mukesh.

So do you think Deepika has what it takes to act in this sequel to the highly acclaimed film? Will the sequel be as good as the original? Send us your feedback.

Danny Boyle Courting a Bollywood Actor?

Oscar award winning director Danny Boyle is obviously a fan of India, but do you know which Bollywod actor has won his heart? None other than Aamir Khan. Ever since the premiere of "Slumdog Millionaire," Boyle has been talking about how he would like to work with Aamir. Now that dream might actually become a reality. As you probably heard, Danny Boyle came to India to save two of the stars of "Slumdog Millionaire," young Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed. The two young actors have been in the middle of a media frenzy dealing with everything from a faux adoption to a house being torn down. What you might not have heard is that on his visit to India, Danny Boyle made time to meet Aamir Khan. The two have had quite a busy schedule so it's actually amazing that they had time to.

Aamir Khan just came back from a vacation in the US and Danny Boyle was busy planning a party for the crew of "Slumdog Millionaire." Details on the meeting between Aamir and Danny are limited. Speculation says that Boyle's next film will be based on a novel by an Indian writer. Earlier, Desi Hits! reported that there could be a chance that Aamir Khan could be working with "Titanic" starlet, Kate Winslet in a Hollywood venture. Could Aamir Khan be jumping the Bollywood ship to swim to Hollywood?

We wouldn't blame him, teaming up with Oscar Award winners Danny Boyle or even Kate Winslet is definitely a good thing for Aamir Khan. We hope that the project works out but let us know what you think. Do you think that a Khan Boyle partnership is in the making or is it just more rumors? Also, what do you think about Aamir Khan coming to Hollywood.

Bollywood Strike May Soon End

By: Mufsin Mahbub

Yes! Audiences may finally be able to breathe a long sigh of relief as latest developments confirm that the ongoing strike in Bollywood between producers and multiplexes may finally be over. After an intense meeting, the two warring parties have kissed and made-up. It is believed that the three-month long strike has cost the industry about 300 crores. Ouch!

Actors Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan met again last Wednesday for another Producers Guild meeting at Taj Lands End, Mumbai. The core members including filmmakers Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt, Yash Chopra, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Eros International's Sunil Lulla and Amit Khanna of BIG Pictures were present for the same. Talking about a solution to the deadlock, Mukesh Bhatt said, "You will get good news in two days."

It was interesting to see SRK and Vidhu Vinod Chopra leave together from the meeting which began at 9 pm and went on for over three hours. The two had fought via the media regarding the hijack of Raju Hirani. While Chopra had alleged SRK of doing it, SRK had denied strongly. But now it seems that the big war has brought these two back together.

A source present at the meeting revealed, SRK was more involved this time and attentively listened to Amit Khanna who explained him the latest developments. Aamir was quieter. As soon as the meeting ended Aamir left before SRK. They avoided getting clicked together.

A meeting will be held soon between the producer's guild core members and the seven multiplex owners. With Vashu Bhagnani also stating few days back that 9 out of 10 issues have been resolved between the warring parties, a solution seems more likely through this meeting.

If this happens then from Friday 5th June, one can see big releases beginning in multiplexes all over the country with Vashu Bhagnani's 'Kal Kissne Dekha' being the first one. Also, Akshay Kumar starrer 'Kambakkth Ishq' was earlier supposed to release in May but will likely be pushed to July/August. It remains to be seen whether Vishal Bhardwaj will release 'Kaminey' in June or not.

Regardless, viewers can expect the biggies to start releasing in July while June will probably be a month of heavy promotion. Grab your popcorn...its back to the movies!

What will you be looking forward to after the strike is over? Drop off your comments.

Himesh Reshammiya Versus Hrithik Roshan This Diwali

By: Mufsin Mahbub

As in almost every Diwali, we see two or three movies released on the same day in a battle at the box office. This year will be no different. T-Series production 'Kajraare' starring Himesh Reshammiya as the lead is going to be a Diwali release. The musical directed by Pooja Bhatt also starring Pakistani beauty Mona Laizza is slated to release on October 16 clashing with two big budget releases - Hrithik Roshan's 'Kites' and Ajay Devgan's home production 'All The Best' starring Ajay along with Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan and Bipasha Basu.

'Kajraare' is a love story set in the picturesque locales of Jordan and Dubai and is reportedly a remake of Mahesh Bhatt's Pooja Bhatt-Sanjay Dutt starrer 'Sadak'. The music of the film has been scored by non other than Himesh himself. Just like he did for his blockbuster 'Aap Kaa Surroor - The Movie' and the flop 'Karzzzz', Himesh will be doing three jobs: actor, music director, and singer. 'Kajraare' was in the news a few months back ago over the producers of T-Series cutting costs after the Himesh starrer 'Karzzzz' bombed at the box office. But later it turned out to be just a rumor as the producers denied any such thing.

A trade analyst informs, "If Himesh wants to resurrect his acting career after a mega debacle like 'Karzzzz' he needs to plan out well the release of his next film. Diwali time is traditionally known to be the most lucrative time for big releases but if Himesh's film clashes with big ticket films starring much bigger A-list stars then getting a decent opening for his film will be a far fetched dream. If the makers insist on a Diwali day release then I would term it a professional hara-kiri."

'Kites' which was viewed at the Cannes Film Festival, has been well received by audiences at the event.

So Desi Hits! Readers, which film do you think will do well, 'All The Best', 'Kajraare' or 'Kites'? Give us your opinion on this upcoming battle of the box office.

Salman's golden advice to Kapoor sisters.

With one of his favorite co-stars Karisma Kapoor sharing screen space with him, Salman Khan was in his elements on Sony's 10 Ka Dum.

The duo who have a long list of flop films to their credit has no qualms at all in listing them. Says Salman, "But one film with me and it turned her career – she became a great star".

Salman complimented Karisma on her great looks even after marriage and being a mother, but hoped that she would put on some weight now. In his usual witty self, he asked her, "Don't they feed you at home?".

Well, the actor also had some golden advice for Kareena too. "Be careful not to lose too much weight, men like women with some weight. Women who lose too much weight begin to look hard in the face, and that is not attractive", quips Sallu Mia.

But the advice that took the cake and applause was when he told both the girls, "Don't stand in front of a fan – or else you might just fly away".

Watch all this and much more this Saturday May 30th, at 9 PM only on Sony Entertainment Television...

Article - Music Licensing That The Music Industry Needs

The ice is getting thinner

While a music awards show turned out to be a disaster, it proved to be a catalyst in the licensing of music. This is what the music industry needs for a business model to kick into place…

By Maheen Sabeeh

Pure and simple as a shepherd’s song

Music award shows don’t always validate talent but they remain a pop culture phenomenon and a necessary platform where excellence is recognized. Awards shows aren’t just about nominees and winners but also about the public getting an overview of what the music industry has accomplished in a given year. They also bring younger acts into focus along with the hip and in-season pop superstars. They show the mark musicians and entertainers have left on audiences, industry insiders and the media in a given year. Ultimately awards shows celebrate history that has been made.

The recently held MTV Brrr Awards fumbled on almost every count. From a bad case of mismanagement to a dead red carpet, the secret music jury, last minute additions to nominations, some bizarre wins, the lack of a media shebang, awful hosting, shoddy DAT performances, few live but badly sounding performances and an unusually high focus on international ’stars’ (read: has-been British-Asian acts), it was a disappointment of epic proportions.

There was one silver lining to the show, though. The deal that was struck between Pakistan’s giant record label, Fire Records and a bunch of music channels that currently includes Aag, MTV Pakistan, Oxygen and Play. Talks with Oye are ongoing as this article goes into print.

The deal is the licensing of music. In simpler terms, it refers to the royalties that music channels will pay to the biggest record label, Fire Records, in Pakistan for playing its music content. It is an alliance of sorts and a necessary one, which may finally bring some form of legal laws into our slip shod music release mix.

If MTV Brrrr Awards did one thing right, it was the timing. They became the catalyst in an ongoing process - royalties for music - that finally took a leap to the next level.

When the nominations were released, MTV had sent letters (to indemnify them) to various musicians who were nominated and many of whom are tied to Fire Records. Musicians like Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam and Strings who were approached, while speaking with Instep, revealed that they did not sign these letters. Meanwhile Fire Records maintained that MTV needed permission to use their content in the awards show. At the eleventh hour, a deal was finally struck, thereby making the use of all content from Fire Records legal.

The show may be unforgettable for its sheer scale of disastrous mistakes but it propelled the issue of licensing into the forefront. Copyrights remain in shadows while everyone pickpockets. Music videos run on local airwaves for free while musicians and record labels remain in a crunch.

Music videos are content and the bill cannot be footed by (a) the musician alone without remuneration from channels as well as other media outlets such as radio channels (b) record labels who are investing in any artist by producing their video and (c) both. Investment is necessary for the music industry to create some form of a business model.

When did your heart go missing?

Is there skepticism? Absolutely. What about the musicians? The musicians will benefit from this deal too and it will propel the industry towards some semblance of structure. Artists often opt for upfront, lump sum deals with record labels because they are aware that copyright laws are neglected. A free ride is no longer an option. If channels pay, whatever the sum, it will eventually enable artists with more options. It will also give record labels an incentive to continue investing in not just established artists but upcoming talent too.

Ali Azmat is a man who must be mentioned. He remains the only artist with Fire Records who did not sell off his rights to the record label. As a result, he owns his songs. Ali opted for a royalty based deal and only gave distribution rights. He maintains it and so does Fire Records CEO Doctor Akbar Yezdani.
But a chuck of artists have, as Doctor Akbar Yezdani puts it, “We’ve purchased their rights and in exchange paid a lump sum.” Now the sum may vary from artist to artist, their market worth, star power, public demand among other factors but the gist remains the same.

Ergo, the long-term effect of licensing of music is one that is unique and historic in this day and age of piracy, lack of enforcement of copyright laws and the increasing need of a business model.

The music business is changing and artists and record labels around the world are looking at alternative mediums. A song can digitally be bought on i-Tunes for 99 cents. By 2010, the price will increase to 1.99 dollars per digital download. And yet, despite such high-tech digital age mediums, record labels haven’t become obsolete. Global economic recession means lesser investment in music throughout the world. Record labels still have a role to play.

In Pakistan, the level of digital music dependency and demand has not reached a level that is being witnessed in the American and British music markets. For Pakistan, these deals of royalties are even more important. Internet piracy of Pakistani music is rampant and accessible to all and sundry. Not only does it affect physical sales of CDs but it also makes it impossible for a record label to even enter the playing field.

The view remains that Fire Records has a monopoly. And right now, it does. Their artist list is massive which includes Ali Azmat, Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam, Strings, Shehzad Roy, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Zeb and Haniya and Laal. This is just from the top of my head.

Upcoming artists include Hadiqa Kiyani, Kaavish, Call, Mauj and Maryam Kizalbash among many others.
The bigger question is this: Will a monopoly work in the long run? No. After all, how many albums with full promotion can be released by a lone label in a given year? And that too in a country like Pakistan where political tension are always escalating. The stressful environment will reflect itself not just on the creative aspect of music but also on the economic front.

“We don’t want to be the only label in Pakistan. I hope that after this deal more record labels will enter the market,” says Dr Akbar Yezdani.

Currently there are a few other record labels operating in here, but they remain in the shadows. The clout belongs to Fire Records and the company is using it. When record labels realize that royalties are a possibility in Pakistan, they will invest in artistes and actively seek out new talent.

With channels and record labels forging a willing alliance, musicians can hold on to their rights and opt for royalty-based deals. It will also give room to other record labels to enter the game because the investment will not be one-sided. For the music industry, the licensing of music is very good news. It shows that a fool proof structure can come into place.

Chris Brown: 'I Am Not A Monster'

Finally! Chris Brown has broken his silence, sort of. The much maligned R&B star has been absolutely silent since his alleged assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna this past February. Well now, he wants to reappear back into the public eye and let everyone know what his plans are. Noticeably upbeat compared to the few times we have seen him stoic and serious in a courtroom, he looked ready for the future and let the fans know he's ready to finish his third album, which he calls "Graffiti."

Perhaps the most important thing Chris Brown said in that short video clip was "I am not a monster." His reputation has taken a major hit since February, from radio stations not playing his music to bloggers and other media ripping him to shreds. He says he has a single coming this summer for the fans that have stuck by his side. We can't wait to hear it!

Do you think the video clip should have been longer and more in-depth? Are you excited for Chris Brown's eventual return to the airwaves? Drop us a comment with your thoughts.

Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Make Ammends

The animosity between Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is thawing, and it looks like they may be on the route to friendship again.

The double backlash started when Shahrukh Khan instantaneously dropped Aishwarya Rai Bachchan from his home production "Chalte Chalte." Aishwarya Rai Bachchan furthered the hostility when she didn't invite Shahrukh Khan to her wedding.

It seems that the two feuding Bollywood stars made amends at Karan Johar's birthday party, avoiding any kind of embroilment between them.

Both stars handled the situation with ease. Sources say that it was Shahrukh Khan who initiated the apology, he is believed to have said, "I think I owe you an apology because in some way I have wronged you."

The two had been conversing for awhile when Shahrukh Khan came forth with an apology. It is said that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan accepted the apology wholeheartedly.

Do you think Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are really okay now or do you think the fight is going to continue? Let us know below.

Dev Patel Plays Villain in His Next Role.

Dev Patel is most known for playing the underdog in the Hollywood rags to riches story “Slumdog Millionaire.” The multi Oscar award winning film brought overnight fame and success to the former unknown actor. His heroic portrayal in the film swooned audiences across the globe to fall in love with his boyish charm. However, Dev doesn’t want to categorize himself by falling into one genre.

Like most Hollywood newbie’s, Dev wants to prove he is more than just a one hit wonder. He wants to challenge his acting skills by stepping out of his comfort zone. Dev will be shedding the good boy persona he is known for by playing a villain in M. Night Shyamalan’s newest film, “The Last Airbender.” The film is loosely based on the animated television series, Avatar.

In the film, Patel will be playing Prince Zuko, the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways to stop the fire nation from enslaving the water, earth, and air nations. This is quite the contrast from his character in Slumdog Millionaire.

The question at hand is… does Dev have what it takes to play a villainous warrior? Drop your comments below and let us know what you think about Dev’s epic new role.

Kylie Minogue Might Make a Future in Bollywood!

Kylie Minogue has been inspired to act, but not in Hollywood. The Australian pop star wants to take her skills to Bollywood.

Kylie is 41 today, but that's not stopping the star from formulating some ideas about her acting future. Preceding her show at the Miracle Africa International Foundation in Cannes she told friends about what she'd like to do with acting.

"I would quite like to do some comedy or rom-com roles," she said.
Back in the 80s Kylie acted in an Australian soap. She wants to move beyond the daytime show type now.
Elaborating on what she'd like to do with acting, she said, "And I think it would be fun to do a Bollywood movie as well."

Kylie Minogue's recent music video shoot for the Bollywood film "Blue" has inspired her to further pursue an acting role in Bollywood. She's apprehensive about her acting skills and because of this has been taking drama lessons.

"I'm taking some acting courses to brush up on my skills. They are going well, but the thought of going in front of an audition panel again scares the life out of me," she said.

Kylie Minogue is getting ready to take on Bollywood. Is Bollywood ready for her? What Bollywood actors do you think she would work well with? Leave us some comments below.

John Abraham and Akshay Kumar Pole Dancing?

So this next bit of news just might be every Bollywood fan girl's fantasy come true! Picture this - the sexy John Abraham and Akshay Kumar shaking their money makers and sashaying around stripper poles! Think you're dreaming? Well, it turns out this little scene could turn into reality if director David Dhawan's son Rohit lands this cast for his directorial debut. Word is, the film is about two men who are unemployed dudes down on their luck due to the global recession (how timely!) So in order to get some cash in their pockets they end up working in a strip club where they pole dance and try to out do each other! We hear John and Akshay are the two guys tapped to likely play the characters.

Reportedly the film will be produced by Akshay himself! And after seeing the John - Akshay pairing in the comedy film, 'Garam Masala,' we're pretty sure this film will be a laugh riot as well. Plus the two manly men share great chemistry and comedic timing together.

Now as for the strip tease aspect! After seeing John in his tiny yellow trunks and equally tiny gray boxer-briefs, we can safely say John Abraham will probably have no issues with stripping down for the film. Plus John even took it all off for his upcoming film, 'New York.' There's no denying John's legions of fans will happily lap up another bout of skin from him! And judging from Akshay's recent strip down on the cat walk at Lakme Fashion Week, seems like he'll have no issues with it either!

Phew! How hot will that be?! Now while both John Abraham and Akshay Kumar have been silent about the film thus far, we hear they will be heading to Los Angeles soon to learn how to pole dance! Damn, now wouldn't you love to be a fly on that wall?!

So what do you guys think about Akshay and John's possible pole dancing film? Drop us a comment with your thoughts below!

Akon & I went on & on: Katrina

Katrina Kaif is a pro at being a showstopper, be it on the ramp or elsewhere. Her act at the closing ceremony of the IPL along with Akon was high on excitement and Kat says that it was only because it was choreographed differently.

Though her team, Royal Challengers, lost to Team Hyderabad in the finals, Kat says, “You can’t have everything in life. The players were disappointed, but you can’t say much at that point. We played a very good series nonetheless.

From being the underdogs in the first season, they’ve come a long way this year. Everything was working in favour of the team. People weren’t expecting to see me there for the finals, but I was there and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed myself, both during the matches and during the performance. I’m really very impressed with the team’s performance and I think that Anil Kumble did an amazing job.”

Kat was excited about sharing the platform with Akon. “It was great. The energy and the atmosphere in the stadium was infectious. We were all so excited. The organisers had told us (Shiamak Davar, the choreographer of the show, and Katrina) that they wanted the closing ceremony to represent the spirit of the IPL. That’s why it wasn’t very Bollywood. It was more elegant, and it was all Shiamak’s idea. He said that there’s been enough dancing and that we should do something really different. Since Jai Ho! is an anthem of sorts today, we wanted the show to capture that spirit,” says Kat.

Performing with Akon was one of the high points of the show for Kat. “We all love Akon’s music. He’s quiet and shy, but seemed really sweet. The crowd totally enjoyed our act. In fact, when we made a re-entry to bid goodbye, we kept dancing, and went on and on,” she says.

Being in the same city, did she get to meet the other Bollywood hottie, Shilpa Shetty? “No, I didn’t see her at all. I was in SA for two RC matches and I was rehearsing in Mumbai for the show,” says Katrina.

T.I.'s Prison Timeline

T.I. was at the top of his game, fresh off of a top selling album "King" and a critically acclaimed movie "ATL." T.I.'s world turned upside down after an altercation in Cincinnati, Ohio turned tragic, leaving his best friend Philant Johnson dead. That would spark the chain of events that would eventually lead to T.I.'s arrest on weapons charges and eventual guilty plea. Let's see the timeline of events that led to T.I.'s incarceration, which started yesterday.

May 3, 2006 Philant Johnson, T.I.'s best friend and bodyguard, was murdered in Cincinnati, Ohio after an altercation at a local club.
September 2006 T.I. releases a video for the single "Live In The Sky" featuring Jamie Foxx. In the video, he dedicates the song to Philant Johnson.

October 13, 2007 Shortly before he was scheduled to appear at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta, T.I. was arrested for allegedly purchasing three machine guns and two silencers among other firearms from an undercover federal agent. He is immediately placed under strict house arrest until a scheduled January hearing which was later pushed back to February.

March 24, 2008 T.I. was able to receive a brief lift on his house arrest to go to Easter Sunday Mass.

March 27, 2008 T.I. pleads guilty to weapons and firearms possession charges in a plea bargain. The original charges would have totaled over 30 years; In the plea deal, T.I. agreed to complete 1,000 hours of community service, followed by a year and a day of prison time.

September 30, 2008 T.I.'s sixth album "Paper Trail," written while he was under house arrest, was released in stores. The album would eventually sell 568,000 copies in its first week, spawn four top 5 hits including the #1 singles "Whatever You Like" and "Live Your Life." The album would become T.I.'s biggest selling album of his career, selling over 2 million copies.

Dec. 23, 2008 Hosea Thomas, the man convicted in the murder of T.I.'s friend Philant Johnson, was sentenced to 66 years to life in prison.

March 27, 2009 A year to the day after being sentenced, T.I. was formally sentenced by a Georgia judge after successfully completing his 1,000 hours of community service. Initially this was supposed to be the date that he would begin serving his sentence; this date would get pushed back to May 26. T.I. would confirm that the death of Philant Johnson was a significant factor as to why he purchased those weapons.

May 19, 2009 Reports surfaced that T.I.'s prison sentence would be reduced to 61 days, with 305 days of house arrest counting towards time served. This report is later refuted.

May 24, 2009 T.I. performs a farewell concert in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.

May 26, 2009 T.I. begins serving his year and a day sentence in Forrest City, Arkansas.

Pooja Bhatt signed Pakistani actress ‘Mona Liza’ for upcoming movie ‘Kajraare’ with Himesh Reshmiya

Pooja Bhatt On Movie :-

Bollywood actress and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt is currently busy in her next project Kajra Re with Himesh Reshammiya and a Pakistani actor.

Bhatt said ‘Kajra re’ was the love story of a rockstar from India and a girl from Pakistan.

“Himesh Reshammiya in the role of a rockstar looks unbelievable. His transition from a playback singer-music composer to an actor has been smooth,” Bhatt recently said.

She said the heroine, Mona, plays a girl from a redlight area. Himesh meets her in Dubai. Himesh’s character has just experienced a tragedy where he has to give up his identity and start life all over again.

“The film primarily dwells on the theme that where there is love, there is no fear,” she added.

Speaking about her own self, Bhatt said she could prove to be a better actress now as she had experience of being behind the camera.

“Producers feel that since I have taken up filmmaking as an alternate profession, I have given up acting. But, it is not so. I am still open to good offers. But, I will not like to direct myself in my own film,” Pooja said.

Preity's Charm wins Neil!

After 'Johnny Gaddaar' and 'Aa Dekhe Zara,' Neil Nitin Mukesh might still be fighting to find ground in Bollywood, but he has got more than enough female admirers already!! Wondering who Neil's admirer is? Well, it's none other the gorgeous girl with a pretty smile, Preity Zinta!

Neil and Preity first met through the Italian brand of watches called Morellato. They are both endorsing Morellato, and were approached after due consideration as Morellato wanted International appeal.

The handsome hunk can't get tired of talking about Preity and claims that she has got the 'prettiest smile!' When he was asked if he would like to work with Preity, his quick reply was very positive!

The handsome hunk Neil and the stunning Preity will definitely make a great on screen couple as well!

Dostana History May Not Be Repeated!

Abhishek and John's sizzling chemistry set the screen on fire in the superhit movie, Dostana. However the latest buzz has it that John may not play the lead in Dostana 2. The rumor is that director Tarun Mansukhani doesn't want to repeat the cast. Rather, he wants some fresh new faces and he is currently writing his script according to the changes he has made.

John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan were the show stealers in Dostana, and it comes as a surprise that the director doesn't want to cash on their chemistry again. Maybe because he wants Imran Khan or Ranbir Kapoor. Furthermore, rumours have it that either of two young heartthrobs may replace John in Dostana 2.

The loyal Dostana fans may only want to see John and Abhishek again, but apparently Mansukhani has different plans.

Karishma and Kareena to grace Dus Ka Dum!

Season one of Dus Ka Dum proved to be an absolute hit with the remarkable anchor, Salman Khan. Although Salman hosted a game show for the first time, he definitely proved to be versatile once again. Salman possessed all the factors an incredible host should have. The actor was very welcoming, funny, witty, and very down-to-earth, which just made the game show worth your time. Celebrities such as Akshay Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Rakhi Sawant along with cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh graced the first season of Dus Ka Dum.

Salman's fans are eagerly waiting for the third season of Jhalak Dikhla Ja to finish as Dus Ka Dum's season two will start shortly after. Buzz has it that the first celebrity guests on this much awaited show will be none other than the Kapoor sisters, Lolo (Karishma) and Bebo (Kareena). Furthermore, rumours also had it that Salman had simply refused to have the sisters on the show. However, a close source revealed that the sisters will be on the show despite their commitments.

Season two does seem way more promising than season one. We can't wait to see Salman back on TV with the very entertaining show, Dus Ka Dum!

Confirmed Winner of Jhalak Dikhla Ja Season 3

The footballer turned dancer, Baichung Bhutia and his choreo Sonia emerged triumphant in The Finale of Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

Indian football captain, Baichung Bhutia and his choreographer
Sonia have lifted Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3 trophy. The lanky Sikkimese dude who initially had hiccups in getting his emotions right on stage beat the talented dancer Gauhar Khan and the crowd favorite Karan Singh Grover, in the finale which was recorded late last night and went on to become the First Male Winner of Jhalak!!
The Grand Finale will be telecasted next Sunday night. "Most finals are usually telecast deferred live, but this had to be delayed because tonight's IPL Finale was being aired live on the sister network of Sony", says a source.

Coming to yesterday's finale, Savio Barnes, choreographer of Hard Kaur told us, "The audiences SMS vote overturned the judges' markings which had favored Gauhar. They selected the second best Baichung as their winner and kept Karan Singh as the third finalist, just like the teen deviyaan".

"There was no face off round between the top two and the audience vote selected Baichung", confirms our source from the sets. Our khabru went on to state that when the top two names were announced, everybody was surprised because it was expected that Karan will get most votes.

Although Savio admitted that Gauhar was a better dancer, he felt "Baichung deserved to win as he had showed remarkable growth and had reached this stage from being a complete non-dancer. Gauhar on the other hand is a good dancer, and she had trained with me too in the past".

On Karan our source says, "There was no growth; he remained where he was right from round one".

Savio who was quite depressed at losing out in the semi finals felt much better when the channel and the jury gave him and Hard Kaur, the Best Dancers' trophy, a replica of the winning trophy, after telling them that this was not out of sympathy, but because they deserved it.

PAKISTANI MUSICIANS UNITING ON A SINGLE PLATFORM FOR THEIR RIGHTS

Pakistani musicians uniting on a single platform for their rights
United for Pop
A deal between Fire Records and music channels is not only the event that transpired within the music industry…
While the MTV Awards were round the corner, Instep held a series of conversations with musicians ranging from Bilal Maqsood (Strings) and Ali Azmat to Atif Aslam and Ali Zafar and found out that musicians are now uniting on a single platform for their rights. Not that they were at loggerheads before, but this time it is simply a more professional direction that will give the music industry a chance to take charge. At least, that’s the plan.

As Bilal Maqsood explained: “We are in initial stages. The name isn’t final yet. But the idea is to be on a singular platform.” Bilal was tight-lipped but promised that details will be released soon.

Atif explained a little more candidly why he sees this union a crucial one for the music industry.

“In Pakistan, foreign content, whether it is Bollywood songs or international songs dominate the airwaves. According to PEMRA, only a certain percentage can be foreign content even if it is obtained legally.

“With foreign content, the local music content gets sidelined. Our artists, music videos and content is overshadowed. We need to build our own stars. It is one thing to run a Bollywood song sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and another to run every other Indian song.

“But this doesn’t mean a deadlock. These are issues that can be negotiated and all of us are in this together, all the artists. We will jump together and we will stand by each other.”

Ali Zafar is also optimistic about the creation of United for Pop (tentative name).

“The industry will finish if we keep this up. Content on channels should be Pakistani. The focus cannot be on India alone or Western artists. We need legitimacy and a balance.”

“Legal notifications don’t do anything. You have to realise that in Pakistan personal relationships also play their part. The content on channels should be predominantly local but it is the other way around. But talks are on and they have been successful,” said Ali Azmat.

It remains unclear what the goal will be of United for Pop, its structure and its immediate cause. But what is striking is that there is a sense of unity that exists and is getting stronger within the industry.

That said, there remains some confusion. A few years ago, the Association of Music Professionals of Pakistan (AMPP) was formed. Now one wonders how United for Pop will be different from AMPP. While Ali Azmat maintains that AMPP is still alive and kicking, it is still a mystery as to what AMPP has achieved in its two year course. Can United for Pop pick up from where AMPP left off?

Even with skepticism, one thing remains clear. For the industry, this is a step in the right direction. The music industry, if aligned, cannot be dictated to by anyone and that is how it should be… if and when United for Pop takes off.

Shahrukh is most welcome on my show Salman Khan

Looking super cool in white T-shirt and blue jeans with white shades Salman Khan had the media eating out of his palm. His tongue-in-cheek remarks and mock anger endeared the gathering. All set to woo audiences with the second season of Dus Ka Dum the actor flew in directly from a shoot in UK to address the media.

In a free wheeling chat Salman speaks up about his show, his personal life and even Shahrukh Khan! Presenting Salman as usual straight from the heart.

What changes can people expect from the second season of Dus Ka Dum?

Technically we are going to follow the same format but this time there will be more fun and enjoyment. I will treat all the guests as I treat others at my home. Actually a host sometimes never gets to know what exactly people want from him. So people are welcome to tell me about their expectations and new ideas for the show.

It is heard that you have increased your price?

Looks like you haven’t heard of recession. I have in fact taken a cut. Who will pay me more?

Normally second seasons of reality shows don’t work. What’s your take?

I think it’s wrong. I guess that KBC’s second season was more popular than the first one. But surely I will try my best to make it more popular than the first season and will try to attract more and more people, because success of a show is in the people’s hand.

But the last season of DKD was a hit because of the celebrities and not because of the contestants?

No, I would disagree with that. Infect I was against having celebrities in the show but then I realised that a normal contestant plays for himself but these famous persons play for the charities. And they also help increase TRPs which is good for any show.

What kind of people would you love to see in the show?

Well, people are people and I would love to see every kind of person in the show. Actually there are auditions being taken to shortlist those people who can play well and also entertain.

Which celebrities would you like to have on the show?

I would love to see Sunny Deol, Dharmedra ji, Sanjay Dutt.

And what about the actresses?

I would love to have Madhuri and Sridevi come to the show.

What are you watching on television these days?

I sometimes watch Balika Vadhu. It’s great and has a unique concept. I loved Avika Gaur so much in the show. I would love to invite her in the show but unfortunately she is below eighteen and cannot be allowed as a contestant.

Are you satisfied with today’s era of television?

Well partly I am not. I adore Doordarshan’s guidelines. They still follow some ethics. Nowdays there is a lot of nudity on television and people think that they are going western and becoming modern. But there is a difference between becoming modern and going western and people should know it.

If you were not a host and would have been invited as a guest?

Well, I would have surely come if Sony had promised me some winning amount. (Laughs). But whatever I would win I would have given it to my charity ‘Being Human’.

Do you think people take you wrong sometimes?

Yes, they do because they are misguided. And I think Dus Ka Dum is a great platform to show the real Salman Khan.

What if Shahrukh is invited to the show?

Well, Shahrukh is most welcome on my show. It’s the channel who invites the guests not I. It will be his good fortune if he comes. And why doesn’t anyone mention Aamir Khan? He is hugely successful at the box office. In fact his episode on Dus ka dum was my favourite.

Paanchvi Paas bombed whereas Dus ka dum is coming with season two?

It’s sad that his( SRK) show didn’t do well. I feel everyone must do well and be successful. The more the industry grows its better for us and for the media.

Nowadays you are being linked to many new women..

Its you guys who are planting these stories. I think the media prays that I go and bash someone or break up with someone. Who are these ‘sources close to the star’s family’ that you guys refer to? They seem to be closer than my seven family members who I live with.

You campaigned for many but ultimately did not vote. Why?

I only campaigned for friends. I didn’t vote as I was shooting for Veer in UK. Had I come it would have been a big expense for the producer. Yes, had I been in Mumbai and not voted that would not be right. I think the Government should make voting compulsory. Also voting for the sake of showing-off is not my idea of doing things.

Are you following the IPL?

No, I am not but my father and brother are definitely following it.
